Updating ubuntu to intrepid

Using a root nautilus file browser window, I moved all the configuration files and directories (the ones with names starting with a dot) to a new directory. The main server for Canada was not responding, and I got 404 errors a few others. After a few retries, I figured out it was ACPI hanging the system on bootup.

Manually updating the system and applying patches can be a very time-consuming process.

However, for a large number of servers/VMs, I would recommend something like Ansible.

It’s a good idea to download new Ubuntu releases from Bit Torrent to get the fastest download and ease the load on the servers. But this is the first time the process aborts way at the beginning. I don’t dare trying to upgrade from 8.04 until I know what’s going on! The Ram looks every bit as cool as the Crane, but my upgrade has been painful!

I found the official list of torrent downloads here: Ubuntu/downloadmirrors#bt I burned a copy of the live-CD and booted it up. My first reboot resulted in the progress-bar locking up on the Ubuntu splash screen.

I hope this helps you to keep the server or virtual machine running in cloud current with the latest security updates automatically.
